On April 30, 2008, head coach Kim Mulked announced that Rekha Patterson, a former Lady Bear graduate assistant, had been hired as the program's newly-created coordinator of basketball operations. Patterson, back for her second stint at Baylor, served as the program's graduate assistant from 2002-04 and was primarily responsible for film exchange, coordinating recruiting correspondence and visits. Her efforts helped pave the way for the Lady Bears' 2005 NCAA championship. In her two seasons, Baylor was the 2003 WNIT runner-up and advanced to the 2004 NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. She returns to Baylor after coaching stops at Creighton, Ball State and Eastern Illinois where she was actively involved in coaching position players, recruiting, preparing scouting reports and overseeing academics. Prior to enrolling at Baylor, she spent one year in the NCAA offices as an Education Services intern, where she helped coordinate the Stay in Bounds silent auction and assisted with the CHAMPS / Life Skills and Continuing Education Conference. Patterson earned her undergraduate degree in public relations from North Carolina A&T in 2001, where she was a four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain in basketball. Upon finishing her degree, she was a recipient of the Black Coaches Association Postgraduate Scholarship and the NCAA Ethnic Minority Postgraduate Scholarship. She earned her master's degree in education with a sports management emphasis from Baylor in 2004. "I am so pleased to have Rekha back on our staff. She was outstanding in her role here as a graduate assistant and I have kept my eye on her career over the past four years. Rekha has an outstanding basketball mind and has excelled in all facets of the game during her career. She is one of the best and brightest young minds in the industry and I value her contributions. Her infectious enthusiasm and loyalty make her a perfect fit for our program," said Mulkey. "This is an exciting opportunity for me. I have always admired coach Mulkey and that admiration grew while I worked under her during my graduate assistantship. To be able to return to Baylor and work for what I consider to be one of the greatest minds in basketball, is another dream come true, and will allow me to be a part of a truly wonderful program and university. I am thrilled to return to the Baylor family," said Patterson. The Red Springs, N.C., native currently lives in Robinson, Texas. |
