CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIF. - The Baylor softball team (9-6) came back from a three-run deficit to score two runs in the sixth, but it wasn't enough, falling to No. 2 Arizona, 3-2 Sunday morning at the Cathedral City Classic.

"I loved the fight our kids showed today," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I thought we came out a little slow, but finally warmed up. We had our chances to win, but this is a game we can learn a lot from."

Whitney Canion (2-3) absorbed the loss in an 80-pitch count appearance, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Courtney Repka came in relief, allowing just three hits, one unearned run, walking none and striking out three in 3.0 innings.

For the first time in the tournament, Baylor failed to score the first run of the game, as Arizona scratched across a pair in the top of the second. Bridgette Del Ponte walked to lead off the inning, and Karissa Buchanan bunter her to second. Brittany Lastrapes double to score Del Ponte, and Lauren Schutzler singled to score Lastrapes for the two-run lead.

Canion limited the damage through four, but the Baylor defense made three errors when Courtney Repka came in for the fifth. Two straight throwing errors allowed Schutzler to score, making it 3-0.

The Lady Bears bats came alive in the sixth, as Leal hit her fourth home run of the season, to right center, bringing Baylor to within two. With one out, Tiffany Wesley singled through the left side, Kayce Walker followed with a single down the left field line, and Jordan Vannatta Walked to load the bases. Courtney Nieten drove in her 15th RBI of the season on a sac fly to center that scored Wesley to bring Baylor a run closer.

Baylor put a runner on in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game and the threat for BU.

The Lady Bears will return home for a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, March 2 beginning at 3:00 p.m.

NOTES: Kayce Walker extended her hit streak to 10 games. Tiffany Wesley owns a seven-game hit streak. Courtney Nieten has hit successfully in five-straight games.
