WACO, Texas – Baylor's Bayley Humphrey was named the NCATA Freshman of the Week, the organization announced on Thursday. Humphrey is only the second player in program history to win the weekly award. Junior Mercy Seay was Honorable Mention for NCATA Athlete of the Week.
Â
Humphrey competed in eight heats this past weekend in Baylor's 274.020-243.240 season-opening win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Pyramid Heat 3 performed has not been competed by another athlete this year and in that pyramid Bayley presses another athlete overhead without assistance, while elevated off the ground as a mid-level. That pyramid scored a 9.9 out of 10. In addition, her acro heat scored a 9.5 out of 10 as she was the only base in this heat working with two different tops.
Â
Seay competed in 10 total heats and team event for the Bears, helping Baylor to eight scores of 9.50 or higher. Her performance in the open tumbling pass highlighted her meet with a score of 9.90 out of 10.0. She also helped Baylor to a 9.95 in compulsory toss, a 9.90 in the five-element acro and open pyramid, and a 9.85 in synchronized pyramid.
Â
The No. 1-ranked Bears will travel to Eugene, Ore., this weekend to take on rival and the No.2-ranked Oregon Ducks on Saturday, March 6 at 5 p.m. CT.
