WACO, Texas - Anthony Hensley slugged a three-run homer in the first inning as the Baylor baseball team cruised to a 10-4 win over conference rival Texas A&M Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improve to 14-3 overall, 4-1 in the Big 12. The Aggies fall to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Baylor now leads the series 2-0 after defeating the Aggies 3-2 on Friday.
Junior Kyle Evans earned his fifth win of the season (5-0), scattering nine hits and three runs over eight innings. The right-hander struck out eight batters and walked just one. For the Aggies, Todd Deininger took the loss (3-2), giving up eight runs on five hits in just one-third inning.
Baylor's offensive explosion started early, with leadoff hitter Ross Bennett getting on base on a walk in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Huggins then singled and Jace Brewer walked to load the bases. Matt Williams was hit by the pitcher to bring in Bennett. Batting sixth, Kelly Shoppach blasted a three-run double. Jaime Bubela singled to right field and Preston Underdown also got a base hit to score Shoppach. With runners at first and second, Hensley smacked a three-run homer to centerfield and put the Bears up 8-0.
The Aggies' Daylan Holt, who led the nation in home runs with 34 in 1999, was shut down, going 0-for-4 at the plate.
Baylor and Texas A&M will meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
