WACO, Texas - The No. 11-ranked Baylor men won their sixth match in a row, upsetting No. 14 TCU 5-2 in a high-energy match Saturday at the Streich Tennis Courts.
After a pair of sweeps earlier this week, Baylor had to battle through tough matches in doubles and at all six singles spots. The Horned Frogs won the doubles point, 2-1. Baylor's team of Mark Williams and David Hodge, ranked No. 8 in the country, beat Scott Eddins and Jimmey Haney in No. 1 doubles, but TCU won the other two doubles matches. This was the first time all season the Bears have lost the doubles point.
Each of the six singles matches was closely fought and highly charged emotionally. At No. 1 singles, No. 44 Johann Jooste upset No. 23 Esteban Carril. Carril won the first set, 7-6, but Jooste responded with a 6-3 win in the second set. In the third set, Carril received two penalty points when his line calls were overruled. The Baylor fans also were heavily involved, causing the line judge to intervene once and ask the fans to cease blowing their whistles during serves.
The Bears' next action comes at the National Team Indoor Tournament, Feb. 24-27, in Louisville, Ky.
