LINCOLN, Neb. - The Baylor baseball team racked up 10 hits, but lost to Nebraska 6-4 in the second game of a Big 12 conference series Saturday afternoon at Buck Beltzer Field.
Nebraska (29-8, 12-3) got things going early, putting a pair of runs on the board in the first inning. Bears starter Josh Scott then settled down and held the Huskers scoreless for the second and third.
Baylor (27-13, 12-5) responded with a run in the third. Tim Hartshorn led off with a double to left center and came in when Kelly Shoppach ripped a single to left field.
The Huskers stretched their lead with a run in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.
After leaving runners on second and third in the seventh inning, the Bears rallied with three runs in the eighth. With two outs, Matt Williams singled up the middle and advanced on a balk. Pinch hitter Ross Bennett then drilled an RBI single to left center to plate Williams. Mike Huggins smacked a double down the left line to put runners at second and third. Freshman David Murphy pounded a two-run single to centerfield to put the score at 6-4.
Scott (4-4) worked four plus innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out two. Paul Thorp came on for three and a third innings of relief and allowed just one run on two hits. Huskers starter Jamie Rodrigue (4-3) scattered four runs on nine hits over seven plus innings for the win.
Baylor and Nebraska will meet for the finale of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
