WACO, Texas - In a game dominated by excellent pitching, Kelly Shoppach's sixth-inning home run lifted the 17th-ranked Baylor baseball team to a 2-1 win over Texas Tech Saturday night at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, the Bears improve to 35-19 on the season and 17-9 in Big 12 play, while the Red Raiders fall to 38-16-1 and 18-10-1. The teams each have one win in the three-game series.
After the game was delayed for an hour due to a power outage, Texas Tech got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning when leadoff hitter Austin Cranford came across on an RBI double by Gera Alvarez.
The Bears answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Tim Hartshorn led off with a single to right field and scored when Chris Durbin ripped a single to the right side.
Stellar pitching by Baylor's Justin Taylor (7-2) and Tech's Chris Phillips (11-4) kept the game scoreless until Shoppach belted a bomb over the 20-foot center field wall in the sixth inning.
Taylor worked seven innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four batters. Phillips went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits.
Bears closer Zane Carlson came on in relief and allowed just one hit in two innings of work to earn his seventh save of the season.
Baylor and Texas Tech meet for the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
