WACO, Texas (AP) - Jonathan Golden scored a school-record six touchdowns Saturday night as humbled Baylor bounced back from a 48-point loss to California for a 50-12 victory over Samford.

Golden scored four touchdowns in the first half on runs of 4, 1, 3, and 16 yards against the undermanned NCAA Division I-AA Bulldogs (1-1) of Birmingham, Ala.

Baylor (1-1) held a 30-0 lead at halftime and Golden kept rolling in the third period with a 17-yard touchdown run and a 28-yard scoring catch from Aaron Karas.

Golden, a sophomore, broke the Baylor record of four rushing touchdowns held by three players and tied the Big 12 touchdown mark also held by Colorado's Chris Brown, Texas' Ricky Williams and Oklahoma's Quentin Griffin. Golden rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries.

Baylor, a 45-point favorite, rolled 96 yards in 10 plays for a score on its opening drive behind sophomore quarterback Karas, who took over as the starter from Greg Cicero following the Bears' 70-22 loss to California last week. Karas was 11-of-16 for 207 yards.

A 57-yard pass to Reggie Newhouse was the key play on the drive. A 78-yard run by Chedrick Ricks on a reverse positioned Baylor for Golden's second short touchdown run to make it 13-0.

Derrick Cash's 60-yard interception return set up Golden for his third touchdown run, and Golden scored again after three consecutive passes of 11, 13, and 14 yards to Newhouse.

Samford's strongest first-half threat came on a 65-yard punt return by Aryvia Holmes to the Baylor 24. Chip Walters' 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Ethan Kelley.

The Bulldogs scored in the third period on a 1-yard bootleg run by Josh Kellett, who also had a fourth-quarter TD pass to Efrem Hill.

It was the first meeting between the schools. Samford, an independent, opened the season with a 24-21 overtime victory over North Alabama.
