WACO, Texas - Freshman middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young hit .500 with a match-high 10 kills and four blocks to lead Baylor to a 3-0 (30-14, 30-14, 30-19) sweep of Alcorn State in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center. The Bears hit .376 for the match and held the Braves to a -.114 attack percentage, the lowest by an opponent in Baylor history.
Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz had eight kills and tied sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Kersten with a match-high eight digs for the Bears (10-8). Sophomore outside hitters Kelly Spriggs and Stella Odion had eight and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Emily Houston had 27 assists in two games, before giving way to fellow sophomore Maggie Chlebana, who dished out 11 in game three.
Tosin Fadeyi led Alcorn State (4-15) with six kills, while Rolanda Mayfield had six digs.
The Bears jumped out to a 13-6 lead in game one by scoring six-straight points behind the serve of freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc, who had four kills on four swings in the opening frame before sitting the rest of the match. Leading 16-11, Baylor scored nine-straight behind the serve of Guilliard-Young and hit .481 to go on to a 30-14 win in game one.
Baylor took a quick 16-6 lead in game two as Kersten served eight-straight points. The Bears hit .414 for the game and Schwartz had four kills as they took game two, 30-14. The Bears had never held an opponent below 15 points in their history before this season, first accomplishing the feat by holding Jacksonville to 14 in game three on Sept. 13 and twice against the Braves on Sunday.
Chlebana started off hot off the bench in game three, serving the Bears to a 4-0 advantage. Guilliard-Young later served up a pair of aces that pushed the lead to 12-3. The Bears hit .241 and held their largest lead at 23-11, before clinching the match, 30-19.
Baylor returns to Big 12 Conference play when they hit the road to face Texas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin.
