Softball Drops Two at Top-Ranked Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. --- The No. 18 Baylor softball team dropped a pair of games to top-ranked Arizona in action at Hillenbrand Stadium on Sunday, falling in nine innings in game one, 2-1, before dropping game two of the doubleheader, 11-1 in six innings. With the losses, Baylor falls to 18-9 on the season as Arizona improves to 23-1 on the year.

In game one, Baylor dropped a tough, one-run decision as Arizona scored an unearned run in the ninth to claim a 2-1 victory.

Baylor jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when Brette Reagan hit her seventh home run of the season, and second of the series, over the left field wall to give the Lady Bears the early one-run advantage.

Arizona managed to tied the game in the fourth when Kristie Fox hit a one-out, solo home run just over the left field wall as the Wildcats knotted the score at 1-1.

Baylor starter Lisa Ferguson held the Wildcats in check throughout the contest; however, the Lady Bears were unable to put a run on the board in the final three frames as the game went into extra innings.

The Lady Bears best opportunity to score in extra innings came in the ninth as Baylor placed runners on first and second with no outs. Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt managed to work out of the jam; however, as the game remained tied heading into the bottom of the inning.

After an error allowed the first batter of the inning to reach base, pinch-runner Danielle Rodriguez gave the Wildcats the victory as she scored on a throwing error later in the inning to give Arizona a hard-fought, 2-1 victory.

Ferguson was the tough-luck loser in the contest after allowing one earned run while striking out six in 8.1 innings of work as the right-hander fell to 9-4 on the season.

Mowatt picked up the win after allowing one run on five hits in nine innings of work as she improved to 10-1 on the season.

A pair of Arizona grand slams doomed Baylor in game two as the Wildcats defeated the Lady Bears 11-1 in six innings to earn the three-game series sweep.

Arizona's Chelsie Mesa connected on a fourth inning grand slam in a five-run fourth as Laine Roth's bases loaded home run in the sixth gave the Wildcats the 11-1 run-rule victory.

Baylor's only run in game two came in the fifth when Jordan Daniels drove home Reagan from third as the Lady Bears cut the lead to 6-1.

Ashley Monceaux took the loss for Baylor after allowing six runs in four innings of work as she fell to 2-3 on the season.

Alicia Hollowell picked up the victory and improved to 13-0 on the season after allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work.

Baylor will return to action on Tuesday, March 14, when the Lady Bears travel to Tempe, Ariz., to face No. 10 Arizona State in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
