WACO, Texas - Freshman Queito Teasley (Katy, Texas) popped a jump of 7.66 meters (25-1 ¾) on his final attempt to overtake senior All-American teammate Chris Gillis, who posted a mark of 7.54 meters (24-9), to win the long jump Saturday at the Baylor Dr Pepper Invitational at Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex. Both jumps were regional qualifying marks and highlighted 12 victories and 11 regional qualifying performances by the Bears in their outdoor season opener.
Freshman Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas) also got her season off to an impressive start by winning the 1,500 meters by more than six seconds with a strong regional qualifying time of 4:21.37. Bedell has a busy week ahead of her as she leaves Sunday to compete in the World Junior Cross Country Championships next weekend in Japan. Sophomore teammate Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.), the Bears' strongest 800-meter runner, finished third with a time of 4:28.74 in her first-ever 1,500 meters.
"I just wanted to get a provisional time, so it was pretty good considering my legs were tired from the hard workouts this week," Bedell said. "I didn't mind having the lead - starting from lane one, I just didn't want to get tripped. I got out clean and was able to be relaxed."
Senior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas), the NCAA runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles, won the 110-meter hurdles with a regional qualifying time of 14.06, while sophomore teammate Jeremy Jackson (Round Rock, Texas) took third in 14.56. Even though he claimed the victory and the regional qualifying time, Miller did not start off the season as he would have liked, knocking off the rust after not practicing the high hurdles since last year.
"I wasn't happy with the race, I didn't feel good. I know I can do better," Miller said. "The qualifying mark isn't on my mind when I'm running."
Junior Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) claimed the victory in the 400-meter hurdles with her first career regional qualifying mark at 1:00.40.
"I was happy that I started where I left off last season," Tillman said. "Qualifying for the regional is big for me because I didn't do it last year. I'm really confident right now and once I get my form down I think I can go 57 or 58 - hopefully 57."
Senior Kandace Tucker (Irving, Texas) won the 200 meters with a time of 23.41, while sophomore teammate Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) finished second in 23.78, both regional qualifying times.
NCAA 60-meter champion freshman Jacob Norman (Tyler, Texas) won the 100 meters with a time of 10.55. Junior Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) blew past the field around the final curve and won the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.16, while junior John Robertson (Greensboro, N.C.) finished second in 1:54.15.
"The race was pretty good," Mutai said. "I didn't know how fast I could go, I just wanted to see what kind of condition I was in. It's good to get out there and get some competition under my belt and see what I need to work on."
Sophomore Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) won the discus for the third straight time at home with a throw of 48.82 meters (160-2), a regional qualifying mark.
