WACO, Texas - The No. 18 Baylor softball team split a Big 12 Conference doubleheader with No. 21 Oklahoma in action at Getterman Stadium on Monday, falling in game one, 9-7, before defeating the Sooners in game two, 5-1. With the split, Baylor moves to 26-16 overall and 6-4 in Big 12 Conference play while Oklahoma moves to 27-15-1, 4-7 in conference play.
Despite breaking a Getterman Stadium record and tying the single-game school record with five home runs in game one, Baylor fell to Oklahoma, 9-7, in the opener. The Sooners used a plethora of two-out RBI to claim the victory as five of Oklahoma's runs came with two outs.
The Sooners got on the board with a single run in the second before Baylor tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Chelsi Lake lifted her 13th home run of the season over the left-center field wall to lead off the inning.
Oklahoma responded; however, with five runs in the third as the Sooners grabbed control and staked out to a 6-1 lead. Samantha Ricketts provided the key hit in the inning with a two-run double as the Lady Bears were forced to play from behind the rest of the way.
A two-run home run by Kelly Osburn in the bottom of the inning, her ninth of the season, cut the lead to 6-3; however, Oklahoma answered with three runs, all with two outs, in the fourth to grab control of the game, 9-3.
Back-to-back homers by Brette Reagan and Lake in the sixth cut the lead to 9-5 as Osburn blasted a two-run home run in the seventh to make the score 9-7; however, it was not enough as Nicole Denes recorded the final out of the contest to pick up the save.
The back-to-back home runs by Reagan and Lake marked the second time this week the duo has gone back-to-back as the pair accomplished the feat against Sam Houston State on Wednesday. Reagan's home run was her 10th of the season to set a Baylor freshman record as Lake's second home run of the contest pushed her team-leading total to 14.
Osburn also recorded a multi-home run game as she pushed her season total to 10 and career total to 32 as her and Lake tied the single-game, individual home run record with two home runs apiece.
Lisa Ferguson took the loss for Baylor after allowing five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work as she fell to 13-10 on the season.
Morgan Hudsonpillar picked up the win and improved to 5-4 on the year after allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Despite the sub-par outing in game two, Ferguson responded by allowing only one Oklahoma hit into the sixth inning as Baylor responded with a 5-1 victory.
With two outs in the third, Harmony Schwethelm hit a RBI double while Ashley Monceaux added a RBI single as the Lady Bears claimed a 2-0 lead.
Baylor made the score 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth when Schwethelm scored on a wild pitch before Jordan Daniels' single scored Reagan to give the Lady Bears a four-run lead.
After the Sooners cut the lead to three with a run in the sixth, Baylor closed out the scoring when Miriam Romero scored out a ground out by Reagan to make the score 5-1.
Ferguson picked up the victory after allowing only one run on four hits in seven innings of work as she improved to 14-10 on the season.
Denes took the loss and fell to 6-4 on the year after allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Wednesday, April 12, when the Lady Bears host Northwestern State in a single game at 4:30 p.m. The contest with the Demons is not on the original schedule and was added at the start of the 2006 season.
