The knees aren't what they used to be and the aspirations of an NFL career are long gone. But the smile has never left Anthony Ray.
On Wednesday, thousands of high school football players across the nation fulfilled dreams of continuing their careers in the college ranks. Twenty years ago, Ray sat at a table on a stage at the Wharton High School auditorium in front of the entire student body and, while flashing his infectious ear-to-ear smile, announced he was signing with the Baylor Bears.
Just about every recruiting service had Ray listed among the Top 10 running backs in the country as National Signing Day approached in 1987. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Ray possessed the rare combination of speed, quickness, strength and size.
