The No. 4 Baylor men's tennis team fell to top-ranked Georgia, 7-0, Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, 7-0. With the loss, the Bears drop to 18-3 on the season.
The Bulldogs swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to take the victory.
Georgia's duo of Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg downed Michal Kokta and Dominik Mueller 8-5, while No. 13 Travis Helgeson and Matic Omerzel secured the doubles point with an 8-5 downing of Lars Poerschke and Denes Lukacs. Georgia's tandem of Luis Flores and John Isner, ranked at the No. 1 spot, defeated No. 18 Matija Zgaga and David Galic in a close match 9-8 (5).
In singles, Georgia's No. 17 Flores defeated No. 16 Kokta in a two set match 6-4, 6-4, while Schnugg, ranked at the No. 92 spot, bested No. 93 Mueller in a second set tie breaker 6-4, 7-6 (5). Baylor's Lukacs started out strong winning his first set 6-2, but No. 78 Hunt came back to win the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
No. 124 Matija Zgaga fought through three close sets but was unable to pull out an upset, falling to No. 43 Omerzel 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-4). Helgeson, ranked No. 11, added another point for Georgia with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Matt Brown, while No. 13 Poerschke took top-ranked Isner to three sets before the Bulldogs put the match away 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
"We were completely overmatched against Georgia. They are definitely one of the best college teams I have seen," said head coach Matt Knoll.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 22-0 on the season.
The Bears are back in action Sunday, April 15 when they travel to Lubbock to face conference rival Texas Tech at 2 p.m.
