LINCOLN, Neb. - Sean Yost tossed a complete-game, six-hit shutout as Nebraska blanked Baylor 5-0 in Saturday afternoon's Big 12 Conference game at Haymarket Park. Baylor (27-22, 10-15) has lost nine consecutive Big 12 games, the Bears' longest conference losing in program history. Nebraska (24-28-1) clinched the series victory, the Huskers' first series win since taking two of three against Oklahoma State in the second weekend of Big 12 play.
Yost (2-5) walked two and struck out six. He worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first and never allowed multiple base runners in an inning again. Yost used 127 pitches, the last of which caught Adam Hornung looking for the game's final out.
Adam Bailey's RBI single and Tyler Farst's sacrifice fly gave Nebraska a 2-0 first-inning lead. The Huskers added a run in the fifth on Cody Neer's RBI double. Nick Sullivan blasted a one-out solo homer in the seventh. Jeff Tezak followed Sullivan's blast with a double and later stole home.
Meanwhile, Baylor collected single hits in each of the first three innings and each of the final three frames but never seriously threatened. Joey Hainsfurther singled with one out in the first, and Shaver Hansen followed with a walk. However, Yost got out of the inning thanks to Aaron Miller's foul out and Dan Evatt's fly out to center. Dustin Dickerson doubled to open the third but was stranded at third. Ben Booker led off the seventh with a single and stole second but was stranded there.
Starter Willie Kempf (4-4) was saddled with the loss for the Bears. He allowed five runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Craig Fritsch worked around a two-out single for a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout.
Baylor and Nebraska conclude the series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. CDT first pitch. The Bears send sophomore right-hander Shawn Tolleson (1-1, 4.68 ERA) to the mound, while the Huskers look to senior right-hander Erik Bird (2-2, 5.43 ERA).
NOTES: Baylor leads the all-time series 30-24-1; however, the Bears are 7-12 all-time at Lincoln. The Bears have not won a series at Nebraska since 1997. €¦ Evatt saw his career-long, 10-game hitting streak end. €¦ Dickerson (nine games) and Hainsfurther (five games) both extended hitting streaks.
