BATON ROUGE, La. - Three Baylor soccer players were crowned US Youth Soccer Region III Champions, as Caitlin Finnegan, Michelle Hagen and Brittany Hunemuller helped guide the Under-19 Lonestars `91 Red to a 2-1 win over Lisa Sliwinski's Dallas Texans at the BREC Burbank Soccer Complex on June 24.
The win gives the Lonestars a chance to play at the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 20-25 in Overland Park, Kan., at the Overland Park Soccer Complex. Hagen finished as the tournament's sixth overall top scorer and registered the game-winning goal in the semifinal victory over Challenge `91. Hanna Gilmore, a member of Challenge, tied for the top spot in the tournament's goal-scoring category, including a hat trick in her team's second game of group play.
In the Under-18 bracket, three incoming freshman advanced to the final, as Alex Klein, Kat Ludlow and Karlee Summey took Sting `92 to the title game. Summey scored Sting's game-winning goal to send her squad to the finals.
"I am very proud of their accomplishments," head coach Marci Jobson said. "I am really looking forward to seeing how all these young ladies contribute to our 2010 season."
The 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series is the country's most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The event provides over 185,000 players from US Youth Soccer's 55 state associations, the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play. The Series is known as the ultimate destination for the country's collegiate soccer coaches and the future of soccer.
