WACO, Texas - Baylor nearly pulled off its second walk-off win in as many games, but Barrett Barnes made a diving catch in left-center field to rob Joey Hainsfurther of a game-winning hit and record the final out as the 14th-ranked Bears fell to Texas Tech, 6-5, on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (12-6) loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Barnes made the catch. Texas Tech (13-6) took a 6-5 lead on Nick Popescu's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.
Baylor starting pitcher Logan Verrett allowed four runs - three of which were earned - in the first two innings, but he settled down and worked scoreless third, fourth and fifth frames to give the Bears a chance at a comeback.
David Paiz got the Red Raiders started with a RBI single in the first, but Max Muncy answered with a RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 1-1.
Texas Tech got back-to-back RBI doubles from Andre Wheeler and Reid Redman, followed by Jamodrick McGruder's RBI single to take a 4-1 lead in the top of the second.
Verrett settled in and struck out six in 5.0 innings, but he did not factor in the decision. Texas Tech starter Jamen Parten allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings, and he left with a chance for the win before the Bears rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Baylor cut Tech's lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Steve DalPorto knocked a two-out RBI double, and Brooks Pinckard followed with a RBI triple off the wall in right field, but Logan Vick's sharp grounder to second was fielded cleanly, stranding the potential tying run at third.
DalPorto finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, a run scored and a walk, while Muncy went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a walk. Redman went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in one for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the sixth when Barnes drove in Redman with a RBI double off Max Garner, who allowed one run in 2.0 innings of relief.
Baylor broke through to tie the game with a pair of runs in the eighth. Josh Turley drew a pinch-hit walk to lead off the inning, and Joey Hainsfurther's double off the wall in right gave the Bears two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Jake Miller's grounder on the right side drove in pinch runner Cal Towey and allowed Hainsfurther to move up to third, which proved crucial when he scored on Landis Ware's sacrifice fly.
Kolt Browder came on in relief to start the ninth and got one out before hitting Kelby Tomlinson with a pitch. Pinckard moved to the mound and allowed a bloop single to Paiz to move Tomlinson to third, and Popescu followed with the sacrifice fly that would prove to be a game-winner.
Pinckard singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, stole second base with one out and moved to third on Slater's grounder. Muncy was intentionally walked, and Towey worked a walk to load the bases before Hainsfurther hit a 3-2 pitch to the gap in left-center that was caught on a dive by Barnes.
Browder (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run in 0.1 inning. John Neely (3-0) picked up the win despite allowing two runs on two hits and four walks in 2.0 innings of relief.
The Bears look to even the series against the Red Raiders at 3 p.m. Saturday. Josh Turley takes the mound against Trey Masek for Texas Tech.
