NORMAN, Okla. - A five-run fifth inning that featured a passed ball and error proved too much for No. 17 Baylor (29-8, 3-3) to overcome en route to an 8-3 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma (32-2, 1-0) Friday evening at Marita Hynes Field in Norman.

"We got beat by the number one team in the country tonight," head coach Glenn Moore said. "But we did hang in there and battle with them. Tomorrow is a new day."

Kathy Shelton paced the offense, tying a season high with three hits to extend her on-base streak to 19, while Sarah Smith added a pair of hits and two RBI. Kaitlyn Thumann's first-inning single extended her hit streak to nine.

The Lady Bears pitching staff walked nine batters on the night, as Whitney Canion (15-5) took the loss, going 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits, seven runs, three earned, six walks and three strikeouts. Courtney Repka came on in relief, allowing one hit, one run, one earned, three walks and two strikeouts.

Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a pair of bases-loaded walks. Jessica Shults led the inning off with a double, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a single from Keilani Ricketts. Shelton came up firing from center and the throw to Hosack beat Shults to the plate, keeping the game scoreless. With the bases loaded, Jessica Vest drew a walk for the 1-0 lead, and with two outs, Lauren Chamberlain got a free pass for the two-run advantage.

Baylor answered back with a pair of runs itself, as a two-out double from Smith evened the game at two. Hosack led off the inning with a single to center and Shelton tallied an infield single before Smith's two-out clutch hit.

An error and passed ball helped lead to a five-run fifth inning that put OU up five. A bad hop at first put Ricketts on at first and runners at first and second. A passed ball on Hosack andvanced both runners to scoring position. Erica Sampson came up as a pinch hitter and hit a chopper to first that was bobbled by Holl, allowing the run to score. Vest followed with a bunt-single on a squeeze to go up two. With two outs, Chamberlain knocked a three-run shot over center for the 7-2 lead.

The Lady Bears loaded the bases in the sixth, looking to get back into the game. Holl walked to lead off the inning and a Smith single advanced pinch runner, Justine Young to second, but an errant throw from center put both in scoring position. Jordan Strickland followed with a walk and a Kelsi Kettler sac fly pulled BU within four. A hit by pitch of Hosack reloaded the bases for pinch hitter Liz Paul, who popped out with two outs to strand three runners.

Oklahoma tacked on another run in the sixth on a third bases loaded walk for the 8-3 lead.

Baylor and Oklahoma will face off for game two on Saturday at Noon. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Oklahoma and Fox College Sports.
