Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 16th-ranked Baylor volleyball squad finished the regular season on a high note with a 3-0 win over West Virginia on Friday afternoon at WVU Coliseum.
The Bears (22-7, 14-4) defeated the Mountaineers (8-21, 2-16) despite WVU pushing back. BU took the first set 25-19, the second at 25-21 and secured the sweep with a third set win at 25-20.
Leading for the Bears were
Kendal Murphy with 12 and
Elise McGhee with 11 kills. McGhee had her second-straight double-double, adding 11 digs to her sheet. Barrett Frazier had a consecutive double-double as well with 29 assists and 10 digs.
Lauren Briseño led the team in digs with 12 while
Alicia Andrew led in blocks with seven. Both Briseño and Barrett Frazier had two aces.
It was WVU's senior night, and their team honored the seven Baylor seniors pregame as well.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Bears started off well with an attack error from WVU, following it with a solo block from
Alicia Andrew at 2-1 and a kill from
Allie Sczech to make it 3-2. Murphy went on a tear, getting three to put BU ahead early, 7-4. West Virginia went on a 3-0 run but ended it itself with an attack error.
Jackie Barrett Frazier and Andrew teamed up for a block to go up 10-7.
Victoria Davis added her name to the box score with a kill, and then
Elise McGhee decided to go on a rip of her own, getting two kills before serving an ace, pushing the lead to 14-9. Davis saved a play and then got the kill, then had another at 18-12 before
Kendal Murphy served her first ace of the afternoon. McGhee had a kill and it seemed like the Bears crept toward the end of the set, but Murphy got a kill and Sczech a block to make it set point, 24-18. The Mountaineers held them off until Baylor took the set, 25-19, with a Sczech kill.
Set 2
The Mountaineers challenged the first point of the set, winning it and taking the next point as well. Andrew got the first point for the Green and Gold and Barrett Frazier served an ace, now tied at two apiece. Andrew got another kill, then Sczech, then Davis. The teams were trading and tied it at 7-all. Baylor started to pull away thanks to lethal blocks from Barrett Frazier and Andrew, but WVU snuck their way in. Andrew and McGhee got the block to be up by one, 11-10, but the Mountaineers kept pushing just as the Bears did. Murphy got kills to stay up one, then a block to make it two, 16-14. Murphy got another kill, then Davis and McGhee teamed up for the block to send West Virginia into a timeout, 18-15. A fire lit, the Mountaineers proceeded to get two kills and two-consecutive blocks to tie it at 19, Baylor calling timeout. Out of it, WVU had a third-straight block, then BU challenged the next play successfully, tying it at 20. Andrew put the Bears back on top before the Mountaineers called time at 22-20. Murphy got a kill, then Barrett Frazier served an ace for set point. WVU delayed it with a kill, but a block from McGhee and Andrew ended the set in BU's favor, 25-21.
Set 3
Sczech got the kill to start the set and WVU served a few errors to put BU ahead by a smidge early, 3-2. The Bears then went on a run, 10-0 to be exact, including kills from Carroll and McGhee that had West Virginia call time at 8-3. McGhee had two kills along with two aces from
Lauren Briseño to make the run what it was, up 13-3. Despite a kill from the Mountaineers, the Bears kept rolling with Carroll and
Manuela Bibinbe throwing down. WVU scored a few to lessen the wide gap, but the Bears were in control. Bibinbe and Sczech got a block, then Sczech followed it up with a kill. Murphy got a few shots to fall, but the Mountaineers were quietly gathering points, the score now 20-12. Carroll kept swinging and connecting, and McGhee and Murphy finished the match, 25-20, to get the sweep.
