WACO, Texas – No. 1 Baylor acrobatics and tumbling faces another new opponent on Saturday when the Bears compete against Augustana on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
The Bears (6-0) will face the Vikings (4-1) for the first time in program history. BU is on a 33-meet winning streak, dating back to March 27 of 2021.
Baylor is coming off a 278.715 to 275.555 over No. 4 Gannon, having a week between the two competitions. The Bears recorded a season-tying compulsory acro score of 9.75 and a season-high 9.70 in the open toss against the Golden Knights. BU did not drop an event to Gannon but dropped three heats and tied two others. Acro and Pyramid continue to be the Bears' strongest events, averaging 29.15/30 and 29.01, respectively.
So far this season, Baylor has seen senior
Riley Chimwala earn three Athlete of the Week awards from the NCATA, while
Jordan Gruendler has earned two Specialist honors.
Payton Washington and
Emily Bott have each earned the Freshman honor as well.
Augustana is coached by Kaelyn Cowan, a former Baylor student-athlete that was coached by
Felecia Mulkey. Cowan earned a pair of All-America honors as a student-athlete in 2015-17, also earning three NCATA Championship titles. Cowan then was an assistant coach for the Bears from 2019-21, earning a pair of titles as a coach.
The Vikings are coming off a two-win streak in Texas, splitting the decision in a tri-meet with East Stroudsburg at No. 11 Mary-Hardin Baylor on March 9. AU fell to UMHB by 6.37 points (265.465-259.095) while defeating the Warriors by 42.85 points (259.095-216.245). The Vikings went on to defeat East Texas Baptist on Monday, 268.270 to 224.395 for a 43.875-point victory. Saturday's meet will be Augustana's first senior night in program history.
