CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Baylor Softball fell in both ranked matchups Saturday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Classic, first against No. 10 Arkansas, 8-0, and second against No. 4 UCLA, 6-2.
THE RUNDOWN
GAME ONE
The Bears weren't able to get anything going in their first game of the Saturday doubleheader, as they were retired in order in the top of the first and Arkansas plated two in the bottom half of the inning on bases loaded walks.
Putting more damage on the scoreboard, the Razorback increased their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the second off of three timely hits and a three-run bomb.
Baylor put a stop to the hot Arkansas offense in the third and fourth innings, retiring them in order but the damage was done as a single from
Emry McDonough would be the only action the Bears saw in game one.
GAME TWO
Baylor got off to a hot start in the circle in game two of the doubleheader, sitting the No. 4 UCLA Bruins down in order in the first inning and limiting them to just one baserunner in the second.
The Bears recorded their first hit of the game when
Brooklyn Carter singled through the right side in the top of the third but that would be the only damage done in the third.
UCLA plated the first runs of the game in the bottom half of the third when a two-run home run put the Bruins on top, 2-0.
Getting a run back in the fourth,
Shaylon Govan was hit by a pitch, before pinch-runner
Caroline Rowatt took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single off the bat of
Abi Flores.
With the 2-1 lead, UCLA added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating four runs on five hits, including a solo shot to lead off the inning.
Trailing 6-1, Govan put a charge into a ball in the top of the sixth, sending a shot way over the wall in left field to get one run back.
Govan's home run would be the last play offensively for the Bears as they ultimately fell, 6-2 against the Bruins.
