OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - David Murphy and Mark Saccomanno had RBI singles in the top of the 14th inning as No. 16 Baylor defeated No. 7 Nebraska 7-5 in the longest game in Big 12 Tournament history here Saturday afternoon.
The victory pushes Baylor to 40-20 on the season, the ninth 40-win season in school history. It also means the Bears stay alive in the Big 12 Tournament. Baylor and Nebraska (44-15) meet again late Saturday night after a Texas-Texas A&M elimination game.
Seth Fortenberry was hit by a pitch to lead off the 14th and then moved to second on a Chris Durbin single. Murphy followed with his second hit of the game, a bouncer through the left side. Three batters and one out later, Saccomanno lined a bases-loaded single up the middle, scoring Murphy.
The game went to extra innings because of Alex Gordon's two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. That shot tied the game 5-5 as the Huskers rallied from an early 5-0 defecit.
Gordon's home run spoiled a solid outing by Baylor starter Ryan LaMotta, who lasted a career-long 7.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with a career-high tying five strikeouts.
Zane Carlson (2-4) earned the victory in relief, his longest relief outing of the season. Carlson tossed 5.1 innings of one-hit shutout ball; he walked one and tied his career high with seven strikeouts.
