LUBBOCK, Texas - Roger Kieschnick's three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and propelled Texas Tech past Baylor 14-4 in Big 12 Conference action Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The three-game series is knotted at one game apiece after Baylor (19-9, 4-4) took Friday's opener 2-1.
After Baylor scored three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game, Texas Tech (21-9, 3-4) answered with a four spot in the bottom half and led the rest of the way. Kyle Martin followed Kieschnick's home run with a solo shot to left-center. It was Martin's second homer of the game. The Red Raiders added another four spot in the sixth, keyed by a Kieschnick two-run triple.
The Bears got a run back on Beamer Weems' eighth-inning solo homer to left-center; it was his second round-tripper of the season. However, Tech was quick to answer with three runs on three hits and a hit batsman in the bottom of the frame to close out the scoring.
Baylor starter Cory VanAllen (3-3) left the game after a leadoff single and a walk in the fifth. He allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout in 4.0-plus innings. Jeff Mandel was the first of three Baylor relievers and was touched for five runs on five hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
Red Raider starter Colt Hynes worked efficiently, using 112 pitches in a complete-game victory. Hynes (3-0) allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Tech scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second on Joey Callender's two-out RBI single. Martin's solo homer in the fourth pushed Tech's lead to 3-0.
Baylor tied the game in the top of the fifth with three runs on two hits and a Tech error. Seth Fortenberry led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on a Tim Jackson single up the middle. Ben Booker then reached when Hynes threw his sacrifice bunt attempt down the first-base line, allowing Jackson to score and Booker to reach third. Kevin Sevigny followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Bears and the Red Raiders conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT. Baylor sends right-hander Tim Matthews (2-2, 3.93 ERA) to the mound, opposite Texas Tech right-hander AJ Ramos (0-1, 5.66 ERA).
NOTES: Texas Tech leads the all-time series 66-62, including a 41-20 advantage in games played at Lubbock. The Bears are 15-25 against the Red Raiders under head coach Steve Smith and 13-18 since the inception of the Big 12 Conference in 1997. ... Fortenberry extended his career-long hitting streak to nine games, while Russo (five games) and Dillon (three) both saw streaks end.
