WACO, Texas- The eighth-ranked men's tennis continued its winning ways Wednesday night with a 6-1 victory over No. 42 TCU at the Baylor Tennis Center to extend its season long win streak to eight matches.
Baylor now owns a 13-2 record on the season and has also won 16 straight matches at home. However, the Bears did not get off to a great start in the match losing the doubles point for only the fourth time all year and the first time at home.
"We didn't start the match that well," head coach Matt Knoll said. "We didn't finish all the matches that well. We are just not that good. We've got to figure that out and we've got to work harder."
In doubles, TCU's No. 2 pairing of Slah Mbarek and Soren Goritzka took down Denes Lukacs and Roberto Maytin, 8-6. It was the first loss for the Baylor duo this season, after starting 6-0. The Horned Frogs then claimed the point as Christopher Price and Emanuel Brighiu jumped all over the 33rd-ranked tandem of Jordan Rux and Maros Horny, 8-4. The Bears' No. 1 twosome has now lost three straight matches and fallen to 4-4 on the spring season.
"We were so bad in doubles," Knoll said. "We have got a problem. We all of sudden decided that we think we are good. We are just not good at all.
"We did the `we are better than you' plan in the doubles and came out not ready to go. TCU just jammed it down our throats and gave us what we deserved."
Baylor did salvage the No. 3 doubles match as Julian Bley and Attila Bucko improved to 8-2 as a pairing by beating Zach Nichols and Paul Chappell, 8-7 (3).
"We decided in the break between doubles and singles that we were going to try to be more competitive and set the tone in singles. We woke up and started playing tennis."
In singles, the Bears came out of hibernation as all six singles players won their opening set and five went on to claim their match in straight sets.
"We won all six first sets," Knoll said. "It is hard not to feel good about that. We just had some individuals that weren't as tough as we need them to be. There certainly were some good performances, but we really didn't put it all out there today."
The 16th-ranked Lukacs, who is now 12-1, was the first Bear off the court as he dispatched of Mbarek, 6-1, 6-3, to get back in the win column after losing his first match of the season last Saturday. Bley followed the senior by winning his eighth straight singles match in a 6-1, 6-4 romp over Goritzka at the sixth spot.
"Julian played as well as he has played in any first set," Knoll said. "He was grinding in California and just kind of using his intangibles. It was nice that he was striking the ball today and playing with more offense. That is a great sign for him."
Maytin earned Baylor's third point with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Price. Then Bucko would clinch the match for Baylor as he defeated Brighiu, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 position. Bucko raises his dual match record to 9-2.
"I think Attila probably beat their best player," Knoll said. "The guy at three is really their most talented guy, so Attila had a good tussle with him. I thought he did a good job."
With the match in hand, Mueller beat Marius-Adri Cirstea 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 and the 28th-ranked Rux got past the No. 99 Nichols 6-4, 6-4. Mueller is now 12-2, while Rux is 11-1 in the dual match season.
"We played pretty well in the singles," head coach Matt Knoll said. "We got some good tennis. We got to hit some balls. We got to compete. Everybody got a tough match and hopefully that is something that will help us."
The Baylor win drops TCU to 5-5 on the year and cuts the Horned Frogs all-time series lead to 31-18. The Bears have won 10 straight matches against their old Southwest Conference foe and are 13-5 in the Matt Knoll era against the Horned Frogs.
Baylor will now travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the No. 1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers at 1 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.
"We got to get tougher," Knoll said. "We got to bring it every day. What we did a great job of in California is we competed hard. We were ready to go. We were focused that is all you are asking as a coach."
Match Notes: Baylor improves to 2-2 when losing the doubles point this season. Under Matt Knoll, Baylor is 240-86 against ranked foes and 243-65 against non-conference opponents.
