AMES, Iowa – Baylor piled up 505 yards total offense, including 288 yards and two touchdowns passing by
Charlie Brewer, but the Bears' upset bid fell short as No. 23/25 Iowa State (6-3, 5-2) held on for a 28-14 victory on a chilly Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.
The Bears (5-5, 3-4) spotted the Cyclones 20 points before striking back with a 15-play, 92-yard drive and getting on the board with Brewer's six-yard TD pass to
Denzel Mims.
Iowa State took less than two minutes to answer with Johnnie Lang's eight-yard TD run, but Brewer came right back with a seven-yard TD pass to
Pooh Stricklin.
Baylor was driving again when Brewer was disqualified from the game after apparently questioning an official's mark on his run to the Iowa State 20.
After the Bears were assessed for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty,
Jalan McClendon came on to pick up a first down with a 23-yard pass to
Jalen Hurd, but couldn't connect on four passes into the end zone as the threat fizzled out at the Cyclones' 12 with 4:49 left in the game.
McClendon threw for 71 yards and had the Bears in position again at the 15 – Baylor's seventh trip into the red zone – but couldn't get them in the end zone.
Baylor had a frustrating first half, rolling up 206 yards and getting into the red zone three times, but came away empty-handed.
Connor Martin missed field goals of 31 and 29 yards, the first one clanging off the right upright, and the Bears had to punt after moving to the 13 on the opening drive.
Brock Purdy hit Deshaunte Jones for an 11-yard TD pass and then finished off an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a two-yard QB keeper to give the Cyclones the early 14-0 lead. And then Connor Assailey hit a 34-yard field goal in the final seconds for a 17-0 halftime lead.
After an exchange of punts on the first two series of the third quarter, Iowa State tacked on a 37-yard field goal by Assailey that made it 20-0.
Brewer was 26-of-36 for 288 yards and two TDs and added a game-high 72 yards rushing on 12 attempts, getting sacked just once. Hurd had 81 yards on five catches and added 46 yards on eight carries with a long of 17.
Senior safety
Verkedric Vaughns had a career-high 11 tackles for a Baylor defense that held Iowa State to 355 yards. Hakeem Butler, the nation's leading receiver coming into the game with 24 yards per catch, finished with just 25 yards on three receptions.
The Bears return home to face TCU (4-6, 2-5) next Saturday, Nov. 17, with the kickoff time expected to be announced later Saturday or possibly Sunday morning. TCU lost to West Virginia, 47-10, in Morgantown.
