THE RUNDOWN ABILENE, Texas - No. 16/17 Baylor softball (21-9, 0-3 Big 12) picked up an 8-5 win over Abilene Christian (12-18, 6-6 Southland) on Wednesday evening at Poly Wells Field.
Regan Green (6-2) took the win in the circle, going 5.0 frames, allowing four hits and three runs, two earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Goose McGlaun worked the final 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, striking out two and walking one.
The Lady Bears opened the game strong, grabbing a two-run lead in the top of the first.
Kyla Walker laced a single through the left side of the infield, stealing second to move into scoring position.
A full-count walk worked by Jessie Scroggins put two on, with Carlee Wallace singling up the middle to drive in Walker and move Scroggins to third.
A double steal allowed Wallace to draw the throw down to second, with a muffed catch on the play erasing any chance on a play at home to allow Scroggins to walk across for the second run.
A solo home run for the Wildcats cut back into the lead, with BU leading 2-1 after the first, but the Lady Bears took it back in the top of the second.
Maddison Kettler led off the inning reaching safely on the first of five Wildcat errors, moving to second on a sac bunt by Taylor Ellis.
A single over the third baseman's head clipped the chalk for Walker, scoring Kettler from second and pushing the BU lead back to two at 3-1.
The scrappy Wildcat squad tied the game back with a two-out, two-RBI single in the third, knotting the score at 3-3 through three.
BU again responded in the top of the fourth, with Caitlin Charlton launching a solo home run to left field, taking back a lead the Lady Bears would not relinquish, up 4-3 after four.
Baylor added another in the fifth on a second solo shot, with Goose McGlaun drilling a bomb over the scoreboard in left field to push the BU lead to 5-3.
Adding what would prove to be some crucial run insurance in the top of the sixth, Nicky Dawson laced a one-out double off of the wall in right field, coming around to score on an RBI double by Walker.
Scroggins would reach on another Wildcat error, moving Walker to third.
A stolen base for Scroggins turned into a run for the Lady Bears, with the throw down to second being booted into the outfield grass, allowing Walker to trot across for the run and moving Scroggins to third.
A third single for Wallace pushed across Scroggins for the third run of the frame, pushing the BU lead out to 8-3 through six.
Despite a two-run final frame for the Wildcats, McGlaun was able to work out of the bases-loaded jam, striking out the potential game-winning run on three pitches to finish off the 8-5 BU win.
