Game Recap: Baseball |
LUBBOCK, Texas– Baylor baseball seems to like working a little overtime.
Playing their third extra-inning game in the last 10 days, the 18th-ranked Bears (26-10, 9-3) came through again with a big hit by Richard Cunningham in the 11thinning to beat the 22nd-ranked Texas Tech Raiders, 11-10, in Thursday's series opener at Dan Law Field.
Fourteen of the 30 combined hits in the game went for extra bases, including five homers, but it was Cunningham's RBI single to center that proved to be the biggest of the day.
Hard-throwing John McMillon retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced before Nick Loftin belted an opposite-field double down the right field line with one out in the 11th. Cunningham fouled off a 2-2 pitch from Dane Haverman before driving in Loftin with a single to center that plated the game-winning run.
"Just an amazing victory for us in all aspects," said Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez, whose team won its fourth of five extra-inning games in holding on to a 1 ½-game lead in the Big 12 standings. "Our offense was doing everything it could against McMillon, who is throwing 98 (mph) out there. I was just really happy for our offense to get one more run and for Kyle Hill to get the win for us."
Similar to Sunday's 3-2 win over Oklahoma, when Hill (6-0) threw three shutout innings, the senior closer had another extended outing. After giving up a game-tying RBI double to Josh Jung in the eighth, Hill retired 10 of the last 13 batters he faced and struck out Parker Kelly to end the game.
McMillon (0-2) and Hill did their parts to quiet explosive offensive attacks that produced 20 runs on 27 hits through the first eight innings.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with singles by Shea Langeliers and Cole Haring, a sac fly by Josh Bissonette and Mack Mueller's double off Tech starter Erickson Lanning.
Mueller greeted reliever Caleb Freeman with a grand-slam homer in the third, Davis Wendzel blasted a two-run shot in the fourth and Haring added a solo homer in the seventh after the Red Raiders (23-13, 6-7) had pulled back within a run.
Haring's team-high seventh home run proved to be critical when Tech answered with two runs in the eighth off reliever Luke Boyd. After doubles by Gabe Holt and Dylan Neuse off Boyd, Jung tied it with his double to the wall in right-center field.
Hill struck out six of the last 10 batters he faced, working around a leadoff walk in the 11thto close it out. He gave up two hits and a walk and hit a batter in his season-high 3.1-inning stint.
Junior left-hander Paul Dickens (4-1, 3.56 ERA) will get the start for Friday's 6:30 p.m. game, which will be televised by FS1, and will be opposed by Tech right-hander Micah Dallas (3-0, 3.66).

THE RUNDOWN
LUBBOCK, Texas
 – The No. 18 Bears battled down the stretch and it took extra innings, but held on to defeat No. 22 Texas Tech 11-10 in 11 innings on Thursday night.

The Bears (26-10, 9-3) took the lead for good in the top of the 11thinning, as Richard Cunningham brought home the go-ahead run on a one-out RBI single.

On the mound, the Bears were led by reliever Kyle Hill who was outstanding, tossing a career-high 3.1 innings in relief, including striking out six, also a career-high mark in relief.

Overall, the Bears tallied 11 runs on 14 hits, with five going for extra bases. For the second-straight game the Bears did not outhit their opponent, but still took the win. Outfielder Mack Mueller was outstanding on the day, going 2-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs. Both of his hits were for extra bases as he brought home the third run of the second inning on an RBI double and then delivered a huge two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third, his first as a Bear and second homer of the year.

The Bears jumped out to a 9-3 lead after plating three in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth inning. The three runs in the second came off an RBI single by Cole Haring, a sac fly by Bissonette and an RBI double from Mueller. The four runs in the third came off Mueller's two-out, full-count grand slam and the two in the fourth came off another big fly, this time as Wendzel delivered a two-run homer.

However, the Red Raiders were not going to go down easily, and battled back with four of their own in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it a 9-8 BU ballgame.

In the top of the seventh the Bears added one more on their third home run of the day, this time a solo shot by Haring.

In the eighth the Red Raiders tied the game at 10-10 on two on RBI doubles by Dylan Neuse and Josh Jung, despite a play earlier in the inning where it looked as though Gabe Holt was caught off the bag at second and was picked off, but after an umpire review the call of safe was upheld.

Hill entered for the Bears and closed out the eighth inning before tossing three more scoreless innings, including striking out four-straight at one point over the ninth and 10th innings. He would finish the game with a career-best six strikeouts in relief en route to his sixth win of the year.

With Hill earning the win, Red Raider reliever John McMillion took the loss as the game-winning run Nick Loftin was his responsibility. Cunningham hit his RBI single off lefty reliever Dane Haveman.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
On today's contest…
"Just an amazing victory for us in all aspects. We jumped up big, with our offense really having great at bats and then our pitching staff towards the end of the game did a great job of holding them off and allowing our offense to be able to score one more run. Kyle Hill really did a great job and our offense was doing everything it could against McMillon who is throwing 98 out there. I was just really happy for our offense to get out there to get one more run and for Kyle Hill to get the win for us.
- Baylor head coach Steve Rodriguez
