Baylor Bear Insider
As a fan, Sunday's showdown between Baylor and Oregon at Betty Lou Mays Field is exactly the type of game Paul Jobson wants to watch.
But, as a coach, "you're going to have a heart attack," Jobson said of a 2-2 draw that saw Baylor (3-2-2) come back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals in the last nine minutes of regulation when the Ducks (3-0-3) were a player down because of a red card.
"That was a big-time college game," Jobson said. "I loved it."
Elizabeth Kooiman was off target on a free kick from just outside the box after Oregon forward Lexi Romero picked up her second yellow card in a span of 23 seconds, resulting in a red-card ejection that left the Ducks a player down for the rest of the game.
Less than a minute later, Kooiman sent a ball into the box that Mackenzie Anthony headed in for her team-leading fourth goal of the season, cutting the deficit in half.
"Once we came into the second half, I thought we really just scrapped and fought and we weren't going to walk out . . . it wasn't necessarily about winning or losing at the point," Jobson said. "It was about playing for pride. And I thought they did a great job just battling back one goal at a time."
The Bears kept the pressure on in the final minutes, with Oregon goalkeeper Leah Freeman tipping away a shot by Kooiman.
Despite being out-shot by a 2-to-1 margin, it looked like the Ducks were going to escape with their second-straight win on a Texas swing. But, in the final seconds of regulation, Oregon's Ally Cook was called for a foul inside the penalty box.
Freeman came up with a diving save of Chloe Japic's penalty kick to the bottom left of the goal, but an alert Japic was there for the rebound and blasted it into the top left of the goal to knot it up and send the game into overtime.
"We kept the theme throughout the game that it's not over until it's over," Japic said. "I told myself, I'm scoring, one way or another, whether the keeper saves it or not. It was a great save by the keeper, by all means, but I was ready for anything. Luckily, it bounced right to my feet again, and I was able to put it away."
Both teams threatened in the two 10-minute overtime periods, with Baylor getting off five shots in the first and two more in the second, but Freeman and the Bears' Jennifer Wandt combined for nine saves in the final 20 minutes.
"We came to win. We were ready to lay our bodies on the line all the way to the end," Japic said. "We came this far, we're not holding back. It's full foot on the gas, all the way to the end, until the whistle blows. I think everybody saw that on the field tonight."
Oregon got on the board in the seventh minute of the game, when Cook was credited for a goal on a ball that was deflected by Wandt and found the bottom right corner of the goal.
"We obviously dug ourselves a bit of a hole," Jobson said. "The first goal was unfortunate, it wasn't the best decision-making there. Unfortunately, we just hit it into somebody else and it went in the goal and we were down 1-0. We weren't at our best at that point."
Dominating possession over the last 25 minutes of the first half, the Bears got off 13 shots to Oregon's four and finished the game with a 27-15 edge in shots and 10-8 in shots on goal.
The Ducks extended the lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute of the second half, when Kess Elmore scored a breakaway goal off assists from Cook and Zoe Hasenour.
"I thought their goalkeeper made some fantastic saves," Jobson said. "We had some near-misses, but she made some big saves. We depend on that, too, she's got to make great saves. And I thought their goalkeeper did that to keep them in the match."
Baylor fought back to record its second-straight double-overtime draw, using the player advantage to score two goals in the last nine minutes of regulation.
One of five Baylor players that logged 110 minutes, Japic said the game was "exhausting."
"Adrenaline is definitely what powered me through that whole game, powered the whole team," she said. "I think we fought from the first minute all the way to the end. Overall, just a great effort by the team. Now, we've got to focus on recovery."
Riding a four-game unbeaten streak with two wins and two ties, Baylor will host SFA (2-4-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday and San Francisco (3-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday to finish off the three-game home stand.

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer came from behind to tie Oregon, 2-2, Sunday night after forcing overtime in the last seconds of regulation.

The Bears out shot the Ducks in the first half 13-4 but couldn't get one in the net giving Oregon the 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Ducks snuck one by Bear goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt in the 7th minute.

For most of the second half, the Bears and Ducks matched each other shot for shot with Baylor having just the one-shot advantage. The big standout is that Baylor racked up more shots on goal than Oregon (10-8).

The end of regulation is where things got exciting for the Bears and fans in attendance tonight. In the 81stminute, Ducks forward Lexi Romero received back-to-back yellow cards, resulting in a red card that had her eliminated from play. The Bears took advantage of the one less player on the field when Mackenzie Anthony headed the ball into the top left corner of the net after a perfect assist from Elizabeth Kooiman

The Bears' momentum had now changed and, with just two seconds left in the second half, a Duck defender was issued a yellow card setting Baylor up for another chance to tie things up. Chloe Japic lined up for the kick and lined one at the Ducks' goalkeeper, who swatted the ball away and set it up for Japic to have another shot as she sailed one into the back of the net as time expired.

Baylor got five shots off in the first overtime period and two in the second but weren't able to capitalize on a golden goal tonight.

Anthony, Kooiman, and Japic all led the offense for Baylor, with help from eight other Bears getting shots off . The backline held strong, while goalkeeper Wandt was able to add six saves.

TOP QUOTES
Paul Jobson on the game…
"I feel good, I'm proud of them. It's not over until that final whistle, and we play like that all the time. We obviously dug ourselves a bit of a hole but I thought we really just scrapped and fought and we weren't going to walk out of here. It wasn't necessarily about winning or losing at that point, it was about playing for pride. And I thought they did great just battling back one goal at a time. Even down to the penalty kick that was missed, so to speak, she followed it up. And that's what you've got to do, it's never say die."

Chloe Japic on staying calm and scoring…
"We kept saying throughout this game that it's not over till it's over. That's my mindset the whole game. A ball looks like it's going out, it's not out until it's out. You play on until the whistle blows. And that was just my mindset. I told myself, I'm scoring, one way or another, whether the keeper saves it or not. It was a great save by the keeper, by all means, but I was ready for anything. Luckily, it bounced right to my feet again and I was able to put that away."
