Baylor Bear Insider Jerry Hill gives his three takeaways from Monday's weekly press conference with head coach Dave Aranda talking about the 66-7 win over Texas Southern in the home opener and Saturday's Big 12 opener against Kansas, which will kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kan.:
  1. CONFIDENCE IS OVERLOOKED: For the second-straight week, the Baylor offensive line graded out the highest among all Division I teams with a 99.9 rating. The Bears averaged 9.7 yards per carry, running the ball for 419 yards, while allowing just one coverage sack in the fourth quarter. Aranda said it's a group that is playing with a lot of confidence. "Confidence is such an important and almost overlooked thing," he said. "For someone to be where they are and want to achieve more and be more and become something they're not, takes confidence. . . . I can see a real, strong change in confidence in that group. I think (offensive line coach) Eric Mateos has done a great job. Just their connectiveness and their level of honesty and keeping stuff real is unique and so strong. I would bet on us with that group continuing to get better."
  2. THIS IS THEIR MODUS OPERANDI: During Aranda's first two years as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator (2013-14), first-year Kansas coach Lance Leipold won back-to-back Division III national championships at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Leipold went on to lead Buffalo to three-straight bowl game appearances before landing the job in Lawrence. "In looking at their two games, you can see the correlation with their Buffalo tape." Aranda said of the Jayhawks (1-1). "I see it being simple . . . let's focus on the things that matter, in terms of the how you do things as opposed to the what you're doing. Just the MO from the coaching staff as I knew them going all the way back to Wisconsin, I think that's how they've always done it. I think there is a real strong identity of what they've got. So, we have to prepare for how they play more so than what they're doing."
  3. STUDENTS STAY TO THE END: In a game that was 42-0 at halftime, you would expect the stadium to start emptying early. But, to their credit, the Baylor students stayed until the final seconds ticked off the clock at McLane Stadium. "They were bringing energy the whole time," Aranda said. "Our guys felt it. The energy that came from there, the sounds that came from there, was all real. And it's reflected on our end. When you're in a game like we were just in, with the score being what it is . . . any bit of emotion coming from the student section helps. I was impressed with them. Look forward to next time."
