HERBY ADKINS, Nederland, Texas (Football, 1959-61) -- 2011

A three-year starter at guard, Adkins helped the Bears earn back-to-back bowl bids for the first time in school history with the Gator Bowl in 1960 and the Gotham Bowl in 1961. His shining moment came in that Gotham Bowl victory over 10^th-ranked Utah State, when Adkins “owned” All-American defensive tackle and future NFL standout Merlin Olsen.

Adkins was Baylor’s first-ever Southwest Conference/Fort Worth Kiwanis Club Sportsmanship Award winner as a junior and then earned consensus All-SWC recognition as a senior in ’61. Herby was named to the All-Decade team of the 1960s after earning both his bachelor’s in business administration (1962) and law degree (1965) from Baylor.

Fifty years after his last game with the Bears, Adkins was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
