WALTER ABERCROMBIE, Waco, Texas (Football, 1978-81) – 1992
Setting records that stood for more than 30 years, Abercrombie started his collegiate career with a then-NCAA-record 207 yards rushing in an upset win at Texas A&M in 1978 when he came off the bench and ended his redshirt season. Despite playing in just six games, he went on to earn SWC Freshman of the Year honors.
Until the mark was broken in 2016, Abercrombie held Baylor’s career rushing record with 3,665 yards. He still holds school records for career rushing attempts (732), 100-yard games (19) and yards per game (94.0). A two-time consensus All-Southwest Conference selection, Abercrombie was named the Houston Post SWC Offensive MVP and a third-team All-American in 1980, rushing for a then-school-record 1,187 yards and leading the Bears to a 10-2 record and conference championship.
A Waco native who was a standout running back at University High School, Abercrombie was the 12th overall selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1982, played seven years in the NFL and rushed for 3,357 yards and 22 touchdowns. He currently serves as an Associate AD and executive director of the Baylor “B” Association.
