Two of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Soccer Coach Nick Cowell:
On last weekend's results
"Well, we're back from windy, cold Oklahoma. Considering the state of our injury list right now, we're happy to come back with a tie and a win against a strong Oklahoma team and a not-so-strong Oklahoma State team."
On the remaining Big 12 Conference schedule:
"We're coming into the critical stage of the season now. We're not in great shape, we're really banged up. The last four regular season games are all very winnable."
"Right now, we're ideally placed in the Big 12 at fourth. We'd like to remain in the top four. I certainly think we can win our last four games. IF we do, we should finish fourth, maybe third... After Nebraska, it really is a dogfight for second, third and fourth."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On the team's progress:
"We've got to stay grounded in the overall process and the big picture. We've got a lot of young guys playing, it's exciting to watch, and fun to coach. You look out there and see Bobby Hart, John Garrett, Eric Giddens... A whole host of young guys playing well. And our senior guys -- Daniel [Wilturner] and Gary [Baxter], specifically -- have improved."
On the quarterback situation:
"We'll go with Kerry Dixon this week... I think Guy Tomcheck's ankle injury was more than we thought. It affected his throwing motion... We don't want him to lose confidence... We'll look for chances to get Tomcheck in and on the right track."
"Kerry's got energy, excitement. He's gonna make some mistakes, you just have to keep clapping your hands, encouraging him."
"[The benefits of playing Dixon are] two-fold. He's done well. It also lets Guy step back and relax, hopefully get his ankle healed. They're both good men, good young players. It helps us overall."
"Mike [Odum] deserves his opportunities, too... But you've got to create a rhythm. When I said we need to find a quarterback, I got cut off. I said we need to find a quarterback who has a rhythm. Guy had that before his injury... It's hard tofind rhythm with three quarterbacks. Kerry will start, Guy will play next. We'll go from there."
On playing so many young players:
"With all the youth we've got out there, it gets you excited about down the road. We've got to do everything we can to win now, but also look ahead."
