WACO, Texas -- Mark Farris threw for 311 yards and a touchdown Saturday as Texas A&M beat Baylor 24-0 and handed the Bears their second straight shutout.
Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 Big 12), bouncing back from a loss a week ago to then-winless Colorado, took a 10-0 first-half lead en route to its 10th straight win over the Bears (2-4, 0-3). The Aggies broke open the game in the third quarter when Farris tossed a short pass to Joe Weber in the right flat and the running back ran scored to complete an 18-yard scoring play. Farris completed 22 of 40 passes.
Baylor, with freshman quarterback Kerry Dixon making his first start, lost its 16th straight conference game. Dixon was 11-of-27 for 107 yards but threw four interceptions, two off deflections. Three of the turnovers led to Aggie touchdowns.
It was sloppy game on both sides, with the Aggies penalized 14 times for 101 yards while Baylor had 90 yards in penalties to go with the four turnovers. Texas A&M piled up 414 yards, while Baylor was held to 236 yards.
After a scoreless opening period, wide receiver Bethel Johnson, on the first play of the second quarter, put the Aggies ahead when he took a handoff from Farris on an end-around and scooted untouched 15 yards down the right sideline, capping a 97-yard, 12-play drive that was started when Terence Kiel intercepted Dixon's pass at the A&M 3.
The spot of the turnover was the deepest penetration of the day for Baylor.
With 4:58 to go in the period, the Aggies took over their 25 and needed only four plays, including 27- and 18-yard passes and a personal foul penalty against the Bears, to drive to the Baylor 3. But the Bears' defense stopped three straight runs by 275-pound fullback Ja'Mar Toombs and the Aggies settled for a 21-yard field goal from Terence Kitchens to make it 10-0.
Toombs added A&M's last touchdown, a 1-yard run with 4:56 to go.
