Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Soccer Coach Nick Cowell:
On last weekend's results
"I'm real proud of our girls right now because of the challenge they faced, based on the enviornment. The altitude at Colorado is hard to deal with in an aerobic sport like soccer, and we came away with our first win ever in Boulder."
"Texas Tech was a huge victory for us because Texas Tech did not play on Friday... They were fresh, we were not. I knew our legs would give out on us at some point. We went up 2-0, and our legs gave out. They tied the game, but Emily Fukuchi scored 16 seconds later to give us the lead back."
On the last two games of the season coming up:
"This weekend, it's a little bit in our hands. Playing Missouri and Kansas, both games are very winnable. We have a good history against Kansas, though they've all been close games. We know it will be tough. There's a lot of parity in the Big 12 right now. Both games are winnable, and both are losable."
On the three-game winning streak:
"We're basically doing it with 11 or 12 players. With Rachel Kacmaryk and Danielle Gurney going down for the season, we've had to go with what we've got. Molly has been banged up again. The result is that we're giving people set roles within the team. The girls aren't wondering if they will start, they know they will, because they have to."
"The freshmen know they're going to start, so they aren't worrying about their job. They don't have to battle for their job in practice, so we can spend more time preparing for our opponent."
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On last week's action:
"Against Nebraska... they are legitimately the number one team in the nation... Unfortunately, we did not show up the way we can. It's good to get the freshmen out there for experience."
"We hit really well against Iowa State. Tisha Schwartz had a career game with 13 kills... We've been pretty average in conference, and our Big 12 record shows that at 5-5."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On last week's performance:
"From a defensive standpoint, we had two guys who really stood out. Samir Al-Amin and Gary Baxter played at an all-conference tempo and ability last week. And of course, John Garrett made a lot of plays in his first start."
On the offense last week:
"Kerry [Dixon] played consistent. He made some mistakes, but he did so in the mindset of making things happen."
On the kicking game:
"Adam Stiles has improved. The fact he got roughed two and a half times last week hurt his late kicks."
On playing No. 1 Nebraska this week:
"Offensively, Nebraska is rolling. But what's the news? They've been rolling for 15 years."
"This is the most difficult offense I've ever defended. People have the perception of the offense as the option, but they've got a little of everything. Shotgun... I-formation... and they'll run multiple kinds of options."
"Nebraska will run against anybody. They lead the nation in rushing. They're gonna run, and they're gonna do it well. Most games, you say if you hold the other team to 150 yards rushing you had a good day on defense. If you hold these guys to 250 yards, you've had a phenomenal day."
"Defensively, people say they've had some struggles, but they're still very good. Struggles are [for them] someone scored 14 points off them."
On Nebraska QB Eric Crouch:
"Eric Crouch is a great player in that offense."
"Couch fits that offense just as Tommie [Frazier] fit the offense when he was there. He's good at the option... Takes turns as a running back when he needs to... He's very fast. He understands the offense. When they've had championship teams, their quarterbacks made the big plays. He makes big plays."
On returning to Nebraska where Steele was an asst. coach:
"I go back there sometimes to see friends, and that means a lot. But this is a business trip, and I've got a team that is my focus. I don't have a feeling that's any different, it's all business... There's a certain anxiety that you get every week. I can't imagine that being magnified, except maybe because we're playing the No. 1 team."
