Baylor men's golf coach Tim Hobby told the Insider that he had signed four additions for his future Bruin teams and they add up to "my best class ever. I credit it to the new golf course we're about ready to announce (hopefully, in early December, says athletic director Tom Stanton). I couldn't have touched these guys without the new course."
Signing with Baylor, Hobby said, were Will McDonald of Birmingham, Ala., Ryan Baca of Sugar Land, Derek Abel of Plano and Jamie McLeary who now plays for Odessa Junior College but comes from a town near St. Andrews in Scotland, the cradle of golf.
Hobby said McDonald is one of the top 100 seniors in this country. Baca is rated No. 1 or No. 2 in Texas and among the Top 50 nationally. "I came down to us or Texas, and we got him," Hobby told the Insider's Hollis Biddle. "That gives me about one in 50 against Texas. Baca shot a 63 last week in a high school tournament."
Plano's Abel is ranked in the top 70 nationally, in Golf Week Magazine's ratings, and McLeary is ranked among the top ten jucos in the country.
No wonder Hobby has been so enthused about the impending announcement concerning the new golf home for the Bears and Lady Bears, and what it can mean for their programs. And now he has a signing coup to back up that enthusiasm.
