WACO, Texas - The Baylor tennis programs came away from the 2000 Big 12 Conference regular season with more position champions and more total honorees than any other school.
The Bears took top honors at nine of the 18 positions, and despite having no runners-up, still earned more honors than any other school. Texas finished second with eight winners (four champions and four runners-up).
On the men's side, Baylor took home championships at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles. Senior David Hodge was the No. 2 singles champion after finishing as the No. 2 singles runner-up in 1998 and as the No. 3 singles runner-up in 1999. Freshman Zoltan Papp won No. 4 singles, thanks to a perfect 8-0 conference record. Mark Williams also finished perfect in conference and won No. 6 singles after finishing as the runner-up at that position in 1999.
The Bears swept first place in men's doubles. The team of Hodge and Williams, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, edged out a team from Texas in a tiebreaker to take home the title at No. 1 doubles. At the second spot, Johann Jooste and Pawel Gajdzik paired for a perfect 8-0 record and the No. 2 doubles championship. Papp and Johannes Michalsky paired for a 5-1 record and won the No. 3 doubles spot.
On the women's side, Baylor took home the top two singles spots. Jahnavi Parekh finished first at the No. 1 position, thanks to a 10-1 conference record. Katja Kovac took top honors at No. 2 singles for the women. Parekh and Monica Gonzalez teamed for the No. 3 doubles championship.
The Big 12 position champions are based on each player's regular season conference record.
Both teams begin their runs at the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City Friday.
