Carlson, Shoppach Invited to USA Baseball Team Trials

WACO, Texas - Freshman pitcher Zane Carlson and sophomore catcher Kelly Shoppach have been invited to participate in the 2000 USA Baseball National Team Trials, USA Baseball announced Wednesday.
Carlson, a righty from Dallas, Texas, has put together an astounding debut season serving as the Bears' closer. He has earned a school-record 11 saves this season and recorded a stingy 1.87 ERA in 33.2 innings of work.
Shoppach, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, has played in 41 games and started 40. He is second in the team in hitting with a .319 batting average and leads the club in home runs with eight. Defensively, he has thrown out 47 percent of would-be base stealers and owns a 1.000 fielding percentage.
The trials will be held in Tucson, Ariz., June 16-21. The National Team will be selected from a pool of 35-40 players at the trials. USA Baseball will announce the names of the remaining players by the end of May.
