WACO, Texas - Oral Roberts University completed its doubleheader sweep of Baylor as the Golden Eagles beat the Bears 9-8 in 16 innings early Sunday morning at the Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (17-5) jumped out in front in the second game, leading 5-0 after three innings and 8-4 after five innings. Oral Roberts (12-3) tied the game, scoring four runs in the ninth as they batted around against Justin Taylor, Kyle Edens, and Zane Carlson.
Paul Thorp (0-1) took the loss for Baylor, allowing a leadoff double to Trevor Leu in the top of the 16th. Jace Brewer followed with an error, allowing the runner to move to third. Leu scored on a sacrifice fly to give ORU the 9-8 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bears put together a small rally, leaving the bases loaded at the conclusion of the game. Steve Dorneman struck out to start the inning, but Matt Williams followed with a single to center. Preston Underdown struck out looking for the second out. Thorp (who was forced to hit when Kelly Shoppach moved from DH to catcher in the 15th) singled off the pitcher's glove, and Jaime Bubela walked to load the bases. Chris Durbin worked the count to 3-1, but popped out to right field to end the game.
Both teams struggled to push runs across the plate, as ORU left 15 men on base and Baylor stranded 27 runners. The two teams also combined for 12 pitchers and 33 strikeouts during the six-hour-and-fifteen-minute game.
Baylor will try to avoid being swept by Oral Roberts as the two teams meet again at 2 p.m. Sunday in Waco.
