Bears Beat Kansas, 8-1

WACO, Texas - Chad Hawkins went the distance for the sixth time this season as the Baylor baseball team beat Kansas on Friday night at the Baylor Ballpark, 8-1.
Hawkins (9-4) won his sixth straight game. He struck out five Jayhawks, walked just one and allowed seven hits.
Kansas (22-24, 8-17 Big 12) pushed across its lone run in the top of the first to take a brief 1-0 lead. After one out, centerfielder Doug Dreher doubled to left. He advanced to third on a groundout, then scored when first baseman Shane Wedd singled to left.
The Bears (37-13, 18-7 Big 12) answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Jaime Bubela walked to lead off the inning and stole second. Kelly Shoppach singled in Bubela with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third, Baylor added two more runs. With two outs, Mike Huggins singled to center and scored when Shoppach followed with a double. Matt Williams singled in Shoppach to make it 3-1 after three innings.
The Bears doubled their run total in the fifth inning. Baylor put together four hits and two hit-by-pitches for three runs to take a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth, Baylor added two final runs as Matt Williams drove in two with a double to left field.
Jayhawk starter Pete Smith (6-9) took the loss, allowing six runs (all earned) in 4.2 innings. Dan Olson pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed the last two runs.
Shoppach and Williams each finished with three hits and three RBI, leading Baylor's 13-hit attack.
Baylor and Kansas match up again Saturday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
