WACO, Texas - Baylor avoided a weekend sweep at the hands of Oral Roberts by taking Sunday's game 10-4, riding the strong pitching of freshman Steven White.
White (4-0) pitched six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven for the win.
Early on, the Bears (18-5) and Golden Eagles (12-4) looked like they would have another tight battle. Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer by Kelly Shoppach, but Oral Roberts tied the game in the fourth on a single, error, wild pitch, and another single.
Baylor scored a pair in the fifth to go up 3-1, but the big difference in the game was the seven spot the Bears put up in the sixth. Baylor batted around in the inning, as three ORU errors contributed to the rally. Two big hits keyed the inning. Preston Underdown singled to left, scoring Matt Williams from second. Underdown took second on the throw to the plate. When the throw got away from the catcher, the pitcher backing up the play threw wildly to third in an attempt to get Nolan Leinweber. The wild throw let Leinweber and Underdown score.
Anthony Hensley and Jaime Bubela followed with base hits, and a Mike Huggins walk loaded the bases for Jace Brewer. The shortstop cleared the bases with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Shoppach.
Oral Roberts scored a pair of runs in the seventh off Scott Lehnhoff, who pitched two innings. Kyle Edens closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Bubela finished off a 9-for-17 weekend with a 3-for-5 day. He was one of six Bears with multiple hits on the day, Huggins, Brewer, Shoppach, Underdown, and Hensley each had two hits.
Baylor goes back on the road Tuesday, traveling down I-35 to UT-San Antonio for a 7 p.m. game.
