WACO, Texas - The Baylor baseball team completed its weekend sweep of Kansas on Sunday, holding on for a 6-5 win in front of 2,632 fans at the Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (39-13, 20-7 Big 12) survived four errors, three by shortstop Jace Brewer, which accounted for three unearned runs for the Jayhawks. Baylor starter Josh Scott pitched well, allowing only one earned run in 5.1 innings, but received yet another no-decision for his effort.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first. Jaime Bubela led off with a double to left, moved to third on Ross Bennett's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Mike Huggins' sac fly.
Kansas (22-26, 8-19 Big 12) took its first lead of the series in the second. Scott walked the leadoff batter, Shane Wedd. When Brandon Smith followed with a grounder to shortstop, Brewer hesitated before attempting the force at second. Wedd was safe at second, and Preston Underdown's throw to first went into the Kansas dugout, advancing Smith to second and scoring Wedd. Two batters later, catcher Matt Oakes doubled to left to drive in Smith for a 2-1 Kansas lead.
Baylor tied the game in the fourth, then went ahead 3-2 in the fifth. Steve Dorneman walked to lead off the fifth inning, went to second on Underdown's sacrifice bunt and took third on Anthony Hensley's sacrifice bunt. Bubela's single to right drove in Dorneman for Baylor's third run.
The Jayhawks responded with two runs in the sixth to retake the lead. Scott allowed a leadoff double, then struck out the second hitter before being relieved by Justin Taylor. Taylor faced three batters and allowed three singles as Kansas took the lead, 4-3.
The Bears answered with three runs on three hits in the sixth to take the lead for good. Kansas pushed one run across in the eighth off Kyle Edens (3-0), but Zane Carlson pitched his way out of the jam as the Jayhawks left the bases loaded.
Carlson earned his 13th save of the year and of his career, tying the Baylor career record set by Jason Jennings. Kansas starter Brandon O'Neal (1-5) allowed all six Baylor runs in 6.0 innings and took the loss.
The Bears' next action is not until May 12, when Baylor travels north to Kansas State for the final Big 12 series of the year.
