Bears Hold On For 9-8 Win over UTA

WACO, Texas - Ron Zboril slugged a grand slam homer to centerfield in the first inning to lead the Baylor baseball team to a 9-8 win over UT-Arlington Wednesday night at the Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears struck early in the first inning when Tim Hartshorn walked and Jace Brewer smacked a double to centerfield to score the evening's first run. Kelly Shoppach and Matt Williams both walked to load the bases with two outs. Zboril hit the Bears first grand slam of the season to put Baylor up 5-0.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the second, and UTA got three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to one run. Baylor rallied with two runs in the sixth, including a solo home run by Jace Brewer.
With the win, the Bears improve to 26-10 on the season, while the Mavericks fall to 16-19. Baylor used five pitchers on the evening, with freshman Paul Thorp (1-1) earning the win. Justin Taylor earned his second save of the season, giving up two hits in three innings and walking just one batter. Todd George took the loss for UTA, giving up four runs on two hits in three and one-third innings.
Baylor travels to Columbia, Mo., Friday for a three-game Big 12 series with Missouri. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
