OXFORD, Miss. - Left-handed pitcher Josh Scott scattered six hits and two runs over eight innings of work to earn the win as the Baylor baseball team defeated Ole Miss 4-3 Wednesday night.
With the win, fourth-ranked Baylor improves to 17-3 on the season, while Ole Miss falls to 10-5.
Baylor got on the board first, scoring a run in the second inning when designated hitter Kelly Shoppach walked and then advanced on a sacrifice hit and a wild pitch before an RBI single by Bryan Loeb put the Bears up 1-0.
In the third inning, Baylor scored three runs and did not get a hit. Leadoff hitter Chris Durbin walked, as did Mike Huggins to put runners at first and second. Matt Williams was then hit by the pitcher to load the bases. Shoppach smacked a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Durbin, and then Huggins and Williams both stole a base. With runners at second and third, Rebels pitcher Casey Fuller walked Nolan Leinweber to load the bases a second time. He then walked Preston Underdown, which brought in Huggins. Mark Saccomanno hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Williams and give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Ole Miss starter Fuller took the loss and falls to 1-1. With his win, Scott improves to 2-1. Freshman Zane Carlson earned his fifth save, giving up one hit and one run while striking out two in the ninth inning.
Baylor returns to Waco to host Oral Roberts on the weekend. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's game will start at 2 p.m.
