WACO, Texas - After taking a week and a half off for finals, the Baylor baseball team's bats returned rusty Tuesday night as the Bears lost to Texas Wesleyan at the Baylor Ballpark, 6-1.
The Baylor (39-14) offense never got started against Rams ace Ty Lowe (11-4), who went the distance. Lowe walked six, but struck out eight and allowed just five hits.
Baylor starter Josh Scott (3-3) allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings to take the loss. Four Baylor relievers shut down the Rams, but the damage was already done.
Texas Wesleyan (36-18) took a 6-0 lead after four and a half innings, led by senior first baseman Shawn Greene's two home runs and four RBI. Baylor scratched out a run in the fifth on a walk, wild pitch, fly out, and a double to cut the lead to 6-1, but that would prove to be the final score.
The Bears loaded the bases in the sixth with nobody out, but Lowe pitched out of the jam by striking out Jace Brewer and getting Steve Dorneman to ground into a double play to end the inning. The Bears never threatened again.
Baylor next travels to Manhattan, Kansas, to face Kansas State in the Bears' final three games of the regular season. Baylor plays Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
