ATHENS, Ga. - The Baylor men's tennis team saw its season come to an end as the Bears' final two entries in the 2000 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships lost on Friday.
Baylor ace Johann Jooste came up short in the singles division, while the team of Hodge and Williams lost in the doubles portion of the tournament.
Jooste, ranked No. 21 in the nation, lost in straight sets in the round of 16, 7-6, 6-2, to 22nd-ranked Tripp Phillips of North Carolina. The win for Phillips was his second upset in a row, as he beat 9th-ranked Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame in the first round.
Jooste finishes the year with a 25-20 overall record. In his four years at Baylor, he was 94-53 in singles, playing all four years at the No. 1 spot. He leaves the Bears as the school's all-time leader in singles wins, and his participation in the NCAA round of 16 was the furthest any men's tennis player has advanced. Jooste lost in the round of 32 in 1998 and 1999.
Baylor's 8th-ranked doubles team of David Hodge and Mark Williams also was upset in the round of 16, falling to Mississippi's 18th-ranked team of Virkant Chadna and James Shortall, 6-3, 6-4.
Hodge and Williams finished the season with a 25-12 overall record, 11-6 against ranked opponents. The pair has been listed among the top eight teams in the nation since December. Their play in the round of 16 was the furthest any Baylor men's tennis doubles team has ever advanced, Hodge and Jooste lost in the round of 32 in 1998 in Baylor's only other doubles appearance.
