MALIBU, Calif. - Baylor's Jahavi Parekh earned All-American status at the NCAA Tournament thus becoming the women's tennis program's first player to be named an all-American.
Parekh, a junior, was selected to play in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament. Ranked No. 20, Parekh won her first-round match today over Cal's Anita Kurimay, ranked No. 18 by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. With the victory, Parekh raised her season record to 38-8 while Kurimay fell to 20-7.
Parekh now moves to the second round of the tournament and will face Stanford's Teryn Ashley a winner today over Ohio State's Kristi Dascoli, 6-4, 6-2. Ashley is currently ranked #38. The match will be played on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Central Time.
According to Baylor Head Coach Dave Luedtke, "This was a typical first match. Kurimay's team had advanced to the semifinals of the team bracket so she had some recent matches under her belt she was match tough. Jahnavi played well enough to win. She was aggressive in the first match but lost her concentration in the second. She fought back, regained her concentration and aggression and pulled out the match."
"I am very proud of Jahnavi. She worked hard to become an all-American, the program's first," Luedtke added.
