WACO, Texas - The Bears in sweeping UT-Arlington, 2-1 and 6-0, posted their eighth straight victory over the Mavericks. Baylor raised their season record to 17-17 while UTA fell to 13-16.
BU sophomore Kelly Fleming propelled the Bears to a dramatic win in game one. With the game tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Fleming belted her third home run of the season, a zinger over the left field fence. It was the third home run that UTA's Cassie Brand has given up to Fleming this season. In fact, Fleming hit a school-record two home runs in one game off Brand in Arlington.
Although Baylor won the game UTA got on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning. Sherri Wardlow reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Monica Koeth's single up the middle.
The Bears countered in the fourth when Sarah Caudle led off with a single to left center, moved to second on Kristen Lancaster's sacrifice bunt and scored on Summer Rohde's single through the left side. That would be all of the scoring until the seventh when Fleming delivered the homer.
Freshman righthander Joni Miller went the distance for the Bears, her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out four. Her record now stands at 8-6. UTA's Brand allowed five hits and struck out one batter.
Baylor senior Carrie Arn allowed only four hits in the second game and struck out six batters in the shutout. Brand pitched her second complete game of the night for UTA and allowed seven hits, issued four walks and struck out three. Arn is now 5-4 while Brand is 9-10.
Caudle led Baylor hitters going 2-for-3 but Holly Fields, pinch hitting for Sarah Sharp, hit a towering home run to right center to knock in two runs.
The Bears clubbed four doubles in game two to go along with Fields' homer. Caudle hit her 6th of the season, catcher Ryan Stukel her fourth and freshman shortstop Stacey Hundley accounted for two doubles, her first of the season.
The Bears' next action will be on Wednesday, March 22 when they host Southwest Texas State in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
