ARLINGTON, Texas - The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning propelling them to a 9-3 win at the UTA/Isuzu Motors Invitational.
Bethune-Cookman got on the board quickly in the first inning when leadoff hitter Lamia Scott singled up the middle, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single by Kamilah Johnson. Johnson was then cut down trying to steal second base.
Baylor answered with one of their own in the bottom of the first when Naomi Fitzgerald led off with a single. She was sacrificed to second by Sarah Sharp, and scored on that play when the B-CC first baseman attempted to catch Fitzgerald off-base, but threw the ball into the left field gap allowing Fitzgerald to score from second.
The Wildcats struck again in the second when leadoff hitter Letasha Robertson singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on an infield single by Cyndra Poe and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandee Lewis. BU's pitcher, Caudle, got out of the jam by getting Scott to ground out with runners on first and third to end the inning.
The game then became a pitchers duel before Jennifer Polk singled for Baylor with one out in the fifth inning. After Polk was lifted for pinch runner Katherine Chamblee, designated player Holly Fields followed with a towering home run to left field giving the Bears their first lead of the game at 3-2. That was Fields' first hit of the year.
The score stayed that way until the flood gates opened in the seventh. BCC pinch hitter Janelle Hall led off by striking out, but then Lewis doubled, Scott singled and Ange' Williams reached on a fielder's choice where no one was out. With the bases loaded and one out, Darcy Villalobos singled home two runs and went to second on the throw, Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Roberston then hit a ball to shortstop and the throw came home where Baylor catcher Ryan Stukel dropped the ball allowing one runt o score. After a pop out, Tamara McGee doubled home two more runs. Then Anna Cindric hit a possible inning-ending ball to second base, but Vanessa VandeBurgt threw wide of first allowing the last two runs to score.
Relief pitcher Joni Miller (2-1) took the loss for the Bears. She came in relief of Caudle with two outs in the fifth. Miller gave up five hits and seven runs, only two earned, with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Mirande Mayse (3-0) went the distance for the Wildcats scattering four hits and three runs, two earned with no walks and eight strikeouts.
