Waco, Texas - With just over three weeks until the 2000 season opener, Baylor Head Football Coach Kevin Steele knows his Bears "can't afford to waste a moment" of preparation time. Following the first day of full-squad, two-a-day practices Wednesday, Steele felt Baylor took full advantage of its day's work.
"They showed a lot of enthusiasm," Steele said. "There were some timing issues that popped up here and there, but the veterans showed a lot of retention from the spring.
"These players have got to hold the pedal to the floor, because if they slip just a little bit they'll lose their entire investment from when they started 240 days ago. This heat is tough, but we can't afford to waste a minute."
The results of Baylor's extensive offseason conditioning program began to show themselves Wednesday.
"We have some guys who have put on 25 pounds of lean muscle during the offseason, and they were adjusting to that a little bit. When you were a 300-pounder and now you're 322, it's different."
Steele was also pleased with the work of Baylor's freshmen, who got their first chance to practice with the varsity.
"I saw a flash here and there from some of the younger guys. They jumped right into the flow of things and kept it going."
Baylor conducts eight more two-a-day workouts, concluding Aug. 18th. The Bears open the season Aug. 31 with a 7 p.m. game at North Texas.
