DALLAS - After waiting a day and a half to start the match, the No. 18-ranked Baylor women's tennis team quickly wrapped up their first win of the season. The Bears shut out Louisiana-Monroe 7-0 at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas on Sunday afternoon.
Under the new format adopted by the NCAA for the 2001 season, the Bears opened with doubles. All three doubles teams won easily. Senior Karin Andersson notched her 57th career doubles win, moving her into fifth place alone in team history.
In singles, junior Katja Kovac won her career-high 10th straight match to lead the Bears in singles. Baylor swept all six singles spots, winning 72 of 83 sets.
The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but rain forced the match to be postponed to Sunday. Continued bad weather on Sunday forced the match to be moved to indoor courts in Dallas.
The Bears' next action comes Feb. 1-4 at the ITA National Indoor in Dallas. Baylor will be represented at the elite tournament by Kovac and 2000 all-American Jahnavi Parekh.
